359th Post Jesus on Harsh Words for the Religious System Con't. - Matthew 23: 16 - 22.

Matthew 23: 16 - 22.
Woe to you, blind guides, who say, "Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold in the temple, he is obliged to perform it." Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? And, "Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obliged to perform it." Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? Therefore he who swears by the temple, swears by it and Him who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it.
This was spoken by Jesus during the last week of His earthly Ministry; before He was to be crucified. This passage shows the disconnect between what the Scriptures say and the Pharisees believed. The Pharisees believed you could swear, one of two ways. One way you were held accountable for that oath, and the other way you were not. The problem with the oath, was that God in the Scriptures told us not to do it at all. Our yes, was to be yes. And our no, No!. Why did God not want us to swear by oaths? If you have to swear that you are telling the truth, that means you lie the rest of the time. Swearing an oath in a court of Law, is not the same, because you are entering your testimony into the court record. Do you tell the truth? Or do you use oaths?
