177th Post Jesus Said on Submission Con't - John 13: 13 - 17

John 13: 13 - 17
You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
This passage takes place in the upper room on Maundy Thursday, the night before Jesus was to die on the cross. Jesus knew that His time with the disciples was short, and He knew they still needed a lot more teaching time. Jesus is still fighting with the disciples about who will be the greatest, even after He had already taught them concerning this very thing. The usual practice of manners, dictated that a house should provide a bowl and a towel for the visitors to wash their feet before entering the house. The bowl and towel were provided by this household also, none of the disciples made an effort to use this. When Jesus, picked up the bowl and wrapped the towel around His waist, His disciples must have been surprised. Jesus went around the room washing their feet. The passage we are looking at, takes place after the actual washing of feet. Jesus was still trying to get them to submit with humility. Think of how hard it was for them to understand, it is even worse for us, because we did not see it being modeled. This teaching is just as important for us as it was to the disciples. You too will be blessed if you do this.
