Matthew 15: 3 - 9.
Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? For God commanded, saying, "Honor your father and your mother"; and, "He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death." But you say, "Whoever says to his father or mother, 'Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God' - then he need not honor his father or mother." Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophecy about you saying: "These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men."
This was spoken by Jesus about 1.1/2 years into His earthly Ministry. The Pharisees were guilty of this practice. Jesus told them the Scriptures state "Honor your father and mother." This means the children were to take care of their parents in their old age, as payment for the parents taking care of the children's needs while they were growing up. The Pharisees would shift the responsibility to God, by saying that everything the parents did was a gift from God; then they would only have to tithe to the Temple and disregard their parents needs. This is not what God had intended. You were to tithe to God, and take care of your parents to keep this commandment. This is what Jesus meant when He said "Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. This will be continued next post.
